Sunset on the college term

#492 #sunset on another #michaelmasterm at #riponcollegecuddesdon Prayers for those working to meet deadlines, #safetravels and for #rest and #recuperation for all of my colleagues as we take space to process all that has happened over this last term. Amen.

End of Office

#295 Finally the presidential staff has been passed on. I have been the President of the Common Room at college since October, and the initials on the staff are a testament of those who have gone before me. It has genuinely been a joy and a privilege, and I have loved every minute of it. Equally though, I am keen to watch others grow in a role which contributes so strongly to #formation for ministry. Today I pray for all those in positions of leadership, that they may be blessed with #wisdom and #discernment, #humility and #grace. Amen.

#198 This evening I lay my competitive spirit at the foot of the cross. #formation has led me to recognise this as more of a weakness than a strength. Last term I ran or went swimming in my spare time. I had a moment in the pool one day towards the end of term where I felt I just couldn’t swim anymore. For most people a relaxing swim is a good thing to do…I make it competitive, albeit against myself! I wanted to swim more lengths in a faster time each time I went. Running was a very similar experience. I feel that this #competitivespirit is getting in the way now as I compete with myself academically to get the best marks ever. I have been reminded that formation is about me becoming what God is forming me to be, and I need to allow myself to be that, and stop competing. What is getting in the way of you just being yourself?

#77 #velveteenrabbit is one of those beautiful childhood stories that still makes me cry. An old horse in the nursery tells rabbit about becoming real: “‘Real isn’t how you are made,’ said the Skin Horse. ‘It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.’”
Becoming #real or #authentic or #yourself is perhaps what happens when you allow yourself to be loved by God. He continues that process of #formation by further shaping you and moulding you, like a potter moulds clay, all because He loves you. Just like the velveteen rabbit was told, it sometimes hurts but in the end you don’t mind and it doesn’t happen all at once but it is worth it! #bemorereal (at Ripon College Cuddesdon)

#57 #Deconstruction was the theme for the first full day of my theological training…both the deconstruction of self as we think about #formation, but also destruction of a 350 year old tree on the site of the college and seen many ordinands pass by. “Where the Lord closes a door somewhere he opens a window!”
